Make Great Money DURING College

The cost of attending college in the U.S. has increased dramatically in recent years. As a result, many students and families struggle to pay for college, with many ending up overwhelmed by debt. In fact, half of the students who start college never finish a degree. The most frequent reason is being unable to afford to continue.

Many students work during college—and more would do so if they could find a lucrative job. Unfortunately, most students work for little more than minimum wage in dead-end jobs. Make Great Money DURING College, the centerpiece of my efforts to help students afford college, is dedicated to helping college students find, land, and succeed at jobs that pay far more than minimum wage—and then to make the most of these jobs for their post-degree future.

Part I of Make Great Money DURING College discusses topics of broad relevance to college job seekers—i.e., topics not specific to those targeting a particular job or field. It covers everything a young college student needs to know about finding appropriate jobs and then presenting themselves professionally when entering the job market. It discusses key topics ranging from networking to the components of job applications (cover letter, resume, interviews, etc.), from how to make oneself more employable (such as demonstrating maturity) to how to get the most out of a job for one’s post-graduation career.

Part II, the core of the book, analyzes over 100 jobs in detail.

  • Many of these jobs, although suitable for college students, will not be obvious to them.

  • A detailed write-up on each job covers landing the position, special requirements to qualify for the job, financial rewards, who’s hiring, getting a foot in the door, words of caution, and balancing work with school.

  • Many involve working directly for established firms, whereas others involve freelancing.

  • The jobs have been selected because they are both flexible and high-paying.

  • Nearly all could be performed by a college freshman or sophomore with limited background and skills.

An appendix called “Short Takes” covers another 20 jobs that are explained in a few paragraphs. These jobs are seasonal, occasional (you can only sell your hair once every year or two), or available only to a very few students.

How to Get Into the Top Law Schools

This best-selling guide (100,000+ copies sold), which I previously put through five editions, has been completely revised to include a detailed look at the new world of law, law school, law school admissions, and legal careers.

As in past editions, this work draws on my 30+ years consulting to law school candidates, as well as in-depth interviews with the admissions, careers, and financial aid deans at the country’s top 20 law schools.

This book remains by far the most analytical and comprehensive look at all of the issues involved in applying to law school. Included are robust discussions of whether to attend law school, how to become the best possible candidate, how to make the most of the application process (essays, recommendations, resumes, interviews, and more), and how to succeed (without spirit-crushing amounts of work) in law school.

Great Law School Admissions Essays

This book, designed as a companion volume to How to Get Into the Top Law Schools, features over 200 essays written by successful candidates for the country’s top law schools. The candidates ranged from 20 to 40 years in age, with vastly different backgrounds—different colleges and majors, different types of professional experience (or none). Similarly, the candidates’ goals ranged from working for Big Law employers to nonprofits, government agencies to consulting firms.

The essays are not provided in a vacuum. Rather than show one essay at a time, disconnected from the applicant, full sets of essays for one or more schools are provided for each applicant. As a result, the essay critiques highlight not just what worked well (or not) in a particular essay, but how the essays did or did not fit together.

In addition, each candidate’s resume is provided. As a result, the critiques include comments about what the candidates could have done better, given their experience (as seen in their resumes).

Priceless Education on a Top Budget

Americans often pay a great deal for college and graduate school education. Many believe that an elite education comes with an elite (read massive) price tag. Of course, this is not an issue if you are unbothered by the prospect of spending $400,000 or more for a bachelor’s degree (plus more for a graduate degree).

This book explores alternatives that cost a fraction of the typical amount of tuition. The emphasis is on undergraduate programs, but graduate programs also receive a good look. In total, more than 100 programs are evaluated—some in the U.S., some abroad. Throughout, the emphasis is on universities and programs that offer first-class education and great value.

Fellowship Interviews: An Insider’s Guide

This book takes an in-depth look at the interview processes used by leading national and international fellowships. It is based in part on nearly three-dozen interviews with the interviewers at a wide range of fellowships, as well as my own extensive interview experience. This experience includes serving as an interviewer for a variety of fellowships, including Ember, Venture for America, and the State Department’s Cultural Vistas organization (the CBYX—Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange), as well as preparing clients for interviews. Additionally, It includes judging international moot court competitions such as the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court in Vienna.

The fellowships include those geared to academic (course, research), experience, project, travel, and other topics.
